Troubleshooting

Helpful Tips:

Reduced Air Flow-If you feel like your fan is not moving as much air as it did in the past start off by cleaning the fan and surrounding areas. Often times pet hair and dust are drawn into the fan and collect on the blades. This build-up can slow down the rotation of the blower. Sometimes brushing the dust off with a light bristle paint brush and vacuuming out the area will resolve this problem.

Blower Not Rotating-The first step to take is to manually check and see if the fan spins freely. The fan should spin freely in both directions with very little resistance. If the fan feels stuck or you feel resistance it usually indicates that the fan blade is not centered between the grommets. This can also happen if debris is lodged in the fan.

If you are still experiencing issues after trying these steps your blower may need to be replaced.

FAQs

Are wood stove blowers worth it? ›

That's great, but why should you have one? Well, because it increases the efficiency of your fireplace. Without a blower or fireplace fan, a significant amount of heat is lost. It'll keep the firebox and your chimney comfortable in the middle of winter, but not your home like it's supposed to.

Are wood stove fans any good? ›

Stove fans don't just improve the circulation of heat, they also boost the performance of your log burner too. This means it will operate more efficiently on a day-to-day basis, but also have a longer lifespan too.

How much electricity does a blower on a wood stove use? ›

Using a national average of $0.14 / kilowatt hour, running a 35-50 watt blower 24 hours a day for 365 days would cost between $35 - $50 annually.

What is the purpose of a blower on a wood burning stove? ›

It works to continually cycle your room's air throughout your hot fireplace. If you don't have a fireplace blower, your fireplace only relies on radiant heat to increase your room's temperature.

Can you put a blower on any wood stove? ›

Most stoves have an air space in the back and the top. If your stove also has this air space, a blower will work on your fireplace. The trick will be mounting the blower.

Can you use a wood stove with a blower without electricity? ›

If your unit has a blower, it will no longer work; however, a fireplace blower is not necessary for the operation or safety of the fireplace.

How many blades are best on a wood stove fan? ›

Fans with more blades are known to be a little quieter than those with fewer blades and more blades usually means the fan has better balance. The more blades a wood stove fan has the better it will circulate air so if you have a large living space you might want to buy a 4 or more-bladed fan.

Should I put a fan behind my wood stove? ›

The Golden Rule: Keep Your Fan at the Back

The best place to position a stove fan is at the back of the stove. This is where the fan will most efficiently capture the heat produced from the wood-burning stove and push it forward and make your room feel warmer.

How long do stove fans last? ›

How long does a stove fan last? Your stove fan will last for years if you look after it. Mileage may vary, though, as cheaper models often overheat and stop working. To get the most out of your stove fan, use a thermometer to prevent overheating, and dust it once a month to keep it in tip-top shape.

Can you run a wood stove all day? ›

In an extended fire, you load large pieces of wood into your wood burning stove, tightly packed, so the fire slowly spreads from log to log, extending your burn for 6 to 8 hours or more. You won't need to reload any time soon. This sort of burn maintains a low, steady heat that can stay burning all night.

How does a wood stove fan work without electricity? ›

a Stirling engine, where the heat makes the gas in a cylinder expand, which pushes a piston. The air cools down as the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, and the air contracts. The piston's movement causes the fan to move via a crank.

How much does a blower help a wood stove? ›

Does a Blower Affect My Wood Stove Burns? No, a blower does not affect the efficiency, burn times or heat output of a wood stove. Instead, it pushes air around the stove's exterior, heating it and releasing it back into the room.

Do you need an air vent with a wood burner? ›

More airtight new-builds always require an air vent. It is easy to test if a stove is getting enough air: open a window a little and if the fire"springs to life" or "performs better" then an air vent is likely required. Rarely is a room so airtight that a 5kW stove requires a vent.

Are two stove fans better than one? ›
