We are a nation of chocoholics. According to a survey by Dechox from the British Heart Foundation done last year, two-fifths of Brits eat chocolate for three meals a day. It’s not surprising, then, that the UK has the seventh highest consumption of chocolate in the world with the average Brit eating an estimated 11kg of chocolate each year.

Whether sauced on top of ice cream, coated on our fruit, or whipped into a light cake batter to make a rich birthday treat, we just cannot get enough.

We tried and tested 11 chocolate cakes from supermarkets and brands to find an irresistible offering. A varied selection, our taste testers favoured the cakes with a light and fluffy chocolate sponge and a thick, fudgy ganache. Find out which chocolate cake is worth the cheeky calories.

This is a very indulgent treat. There are light sponge layers of thick chocolate ganache decorated with piped swirls for a beautiful understated classic look. There's a pleasant bitterness from Belgian chocolate frosting, giving this cake a rich aroma, sweetened by a milky cocoa scent.

Testers loved the complex aroma of this cake. Strong bittersweet cocoa notes with hints of coffee whet our appetites. Buttery, fudgy ganache is embedded with chocolate curls which, when bitten into, have a pleasant light crunch. The sponge was light and springy but a little dry.

The gold lustre adds a level of style to this cake that our panel loved. The simplicity of the chocolate chips on the outside and the height of the cake gave it a gourmet impression. It has a rich chocolate taste and a bitterness to it that helps balance out the sweetness of the icing. The cake was a touch overbaked but the velvety smooth buttercream saved the day.

Score: 74/100

Chocolate and caramel lovers rejoice! This impressive drip cake with its chocolate shards, biscuit balls and truffles had our panel eager to bite into it. Its rich, fudgy toffee aroma filled the room as soon as it was cut into, revealing a moist, crumbly cake with a light and fluffy caramel buttercream. The testers loved the different textures from the decorations but found the flavour to be far too sweet with the caramel dominating the chocolate flavour.

Co-op Chocolate Chaos Cake

Score: 72/100

Chocolate and caramel go so well together in this fun and decadent cake. Decorated with many textured chocolate balls and swirls of icing, it had our panel impressed by its grandeur. It had a deep, alluring aroma of chocolate, caramel and fudginess but our panel found this cake tasted very sweet and had an artificial, manufactured taste to it. The sponge is also dry but it is balanced out by the generous helping of whipped buttercream. The crunchy chocolate balls also add a nice mix of texture too.

Score: 71/100

Serves 20

Our panel loved the look of this decadent chocolate drip cake. It has nice swirled icing piped on top with flakes, chocolate curls and chocolate balls. We loved its mouth-wateringly rich chocolate-brownie aroma but some of our tasters found the flavour slightly too rich and bitter from the cocoa. The sponge itself was good, not too dry with a beautifully smooth and balanced buttercream in the middle.

Iceland Celebration Chocolate Cake

Score: 69/100

Serves 16

White chocolate stars, milk chocolate swirls and crunchy chocolate pearls decorate a thick ganache for an inviting look. The cake has a rich chocolate smell but the flavour itself is lacking. Despite the depth of cocoa in the aroma, we found the icing too mild and the sponge virtually flavourless. Though dry, the sponge is saved by the ganache filling which created a moist middle layer. The decorations also added a nice element of texture.

Our panel weren't overly wowed by this cake, though wonderfully moist the flavour was average and lacked depth. That said we loved the addition of milk and white chocolate curls on the side of the cake and enjoyed the rich chocolate aroma. The sponge was light and the icing lovely and smooth.

Propermaid Celebration Cake Triple Chocolate Frozen

Score: 63/100

Triple chocolate and triple layered, this cake looks rustic and intensely rich, but we were slightly disappointed by its average flavour. Though it's chocolatey with vanilla and bitter notes, our panel found it sickly-sweet and artificial tasting with a gooey texture likened to a Mississippi mud pie.

Aldi Chocolate Party Cake

Score: 55/100

Serves 16

This classic cake has an array of decorations on the top with its chocolate flakes, balls and stars. It has a pleasing yet very subtle chocolate smell, but testers also picked up on a bread-like note. The cake is very dry, with little depth of flavour. Testers were also disappointed by the overriding sugary taste coming through. That said, our panel loved the addition of the crunchy chocolate balls on top for a different texture.

Lidl Rowan Hill Chocolate Party Cake

Topped with plenty of chocolate pearls and white and dark chocolate curls on top, however, the cake looks unappealing, dry and not as exciting when compared to others tested. Though it has a very mild cocoa smell, we were unimpressed with its stale aroma. It also had an unpleasant graininess which wasn't a hit for our panel.
