Our Neopets are our babies, but what happens when we go offline? They need their own pets to take care of and to keep them company. It only makes sense to call these slightly smaller animals Petpets, and there are 493 of them so far.

Petpets can be bought from specialist stores in each region, and their designs are unique to where they come from. You can also paint these little cuties, and give them Petpetpets too of course! You start the game with one of three origami-looking Petpets in your inventory, so your Neopet need never be alone.

10 Baby Blu

This cute little guy seems to be the pre-evolution of a Blumaroo if they evolved from seahorses, and there are a few Petpets that could be related to their owners, though it's never been confirmed. Creatures like Noils may be mini Yurbles, and Lutra certainly bears a strong resemblance to Lutari.

Baby Blus can be bought from Maraquan Petpets, so the likeness to a seahorse isn't for nothing. They can be painted twelve different colors, including Halloween, which matches their Blumaroo buddy's paint job perfectly, so give a Baby Blu to a Blumaroo for the perfect pair.

9 Bat Boy

There are three Spooky Petpets that are basically just children dressing up for Halloween, and they're adorable. Lil' Frankie and Mummy Baby round out the trio as the humanoid pets, all with cute little grins on their faces.

Bat Boy's facial design reminds us of the old-timey Mickey Mouse cartoons, and even though there are no painted versions of this Petpet, who would want to change him? Why not give your Neopet a tiny human for company?

8 Belonthiss

Belonthiss are gorgeous, flying fish creatures, that can be found swimming in clear waters, or through the air on currents of cloud. Their purple, orange, and cream coloring is so pretty, and their fins trail along behind them.

Where else would you get such a mystical Petpet than Fanciful Fauna in Shenkuu, which is full of tinkling streams and rolling clouds for the Belonthiss to swim through? If your Neopet is painted Faerie, then gift it a gold and pink Faerie Belonthiss to match it beautifully.

7 Dandan

Based on the real-life red panda, the Dandan is such a cutie and can be found relaxing in trees, watching the world go by down below. They're 90 percent fluffy tail and come in nine colors, including Faerie with little wings, and Grey, giving them big sad eyebrows.

Regardless of your color of choice, you can always pick up this sweet fellow at the Fanciful Fauna, or even go and meet one in the Petpet Park Mall, where Sisilia the Dandan runs a shop that you can visit.

6 Greeble

Going in a slightly different direction you can now meet Greeble, whatever it is, since we're not totally sure what Greebles are, and they don't seem to know either. There isn't a thought going on behind those big bug eyes, and as a combination of frog and bat, Greebles can be bought from Neopia Central since the year 2000.

The 20-foot-long tongue is the only real character trait they have, but you can slop some paint on them to change up that haunting stare a bit. They come in twelve colors, and you can either paint them with a Faerie Petpet Paint Brush to give them wings or give them the Ghost color to make those eyeballs really pop.

5 Tiny Giant Squid

Tiny Giants Squids are the only Petpet with an animated picture, so your Neopet will have endless fun dancing about under its jets of water and wriggling tentacles. Maybe don't take it anywhere near the ocean though, as the Tiny Giant Squid may suddenly remember how big it's supposed to be.

It can only be acquired from a Habitarium Goodies Chest, which was handed out as a prize for playing Habitarium, and it came with some very small pieces of food and a toy shaped like a Snow Petpetpet. It was released in 2014, and unfortunately cannot be painted

4 Intesteen

Now, this little guy is a weird one. Its caption says it 'gets irritable when fed the wrong food' as a reference to the medical condition Irritable Bowel Syndrome. For a large intestine with googly eyes, it's actually kind of cute, especially when painted with a Pink or Faerie Petpet Paint Brush.

They come in five colors and are a Spooky Petpet from the Haunted Woods. The worst part is that you can purchase and feed your Neopets an Intesteen Casserole! Offal meat may be good for you, but come on, don't feed your Neopets their Petpets.

3 Meepit

A real classic, and an avatar for Neopets that's recognized by every player, the Meepit is also a Spooky Petpet, which makes you wonder what it did to deserve that typing. Their adorable, staring eyes and little overbite make them the perfect practice Petpet for any Neopet, like your first hamster as a kid.

They come in a whopping 31 colors, so you could give each of your Neopets a different unique style, since some of the best Paint Brushes are Birthday (for a little cupcake cutie), Dung, and Mutant. If you have some Meepits left over, you can combine them at the Mystery Island Cooking pot to get a Fishing Meepit Statue, or a Romeep 3T3, which is a whole new Petpet.

2 Rock

Only 90s kids will remember pet rocks, and this Petpet really shows our age. Naturally, Rock is a Tyrannian Petpet, available from their shop in the jungle, and it's another perfect starter Petpet for your less responsible Neopets that maybe can't yet be trusted with a living creature.

However, that doesn't mean Rock is boring, because you can paint it in 28 colors, and the designs are so incredibly creative and funny. The Elderly Paint Brush turns Rocks into diamonds, the Desert color is reminiscent of Coltzan's Shrine, Island Rock is basically just a Mau Codestone, and Stealthy has an imprint of a key inside it!

1 Pile Of Soot

Uh oh! So, you thought you could use untested laboratory equipment on a poor, innocent Petpet? Well, now you get a secret avatar and your Neopet has to find a dustpan for its companion. Sometimes the Petpet Laboratory Ray malfunctions, and instead of a snazzy new color, you get a Pile of Soot.

This poor creature can't be painted, traded, or sold, and a Neopet with one equipped can't be put in the pound. Though sometimes, the Ray will bestow a Pile of Snow instead, so if you were really attached to the form it had before, you can unequip the poor thing and it will revert to its original state in your inventory.
